Elliot Silver breaks the news, DomainInvesting.com, Woo.com Acquired by WooCommerce: “The domain name had been registered at Network Solutions under Whois privacy, and the domain name status changed. Woo.com is still registered at Network Solutions, but instead of Whois privacy, the domain name registrant information shows “REDACTED FOR PRIVACY (DT),” likely due to California privacy laws.”

I have confirmed over at ICANN’s Domain Name Registration Data Lookup that an update to RDAP for Woo.com occurred at 2021-04-23T09:25:10Z. Additionally I’ve reached out to Automattic, WooCommerce, and the previous owner of woo.com, Mason Woo. Mason was unable to comment due to confidentiality agreements.
Speculation Time
There are a couple of ways to think about woo.com. First, is this just a part of rebranding? Woo is easier to say, find, and start prefixing other applications (i.e. woo.com/email).
The second, and bigger thought, will there be a Woo SaaS solution? Can you imagine the sudden growth in WooCommerce if it was offered as a SaaS solution for existing WordPress users, as well as running it’s own “Shopify?”
And a quick update from Matt Mullenweg, founder of Automattic, “We’re excited to have it. Haven’t decided exactly the best way to use it yet.”
